How Loitering's scores break down: upcoming events by source, date, and the model's answers; which sources lead to good events; and past events, where an independent label tests the scores. The events themselves are on Upcoming events.

Upcoming events

The events you could still go to.

Vibe scores

Each dot is one event; hover to see its title. The bar marks each source's median score, and sources run from lowest to highest average.

Outlier events by source

Some sources list mostly poor events but a few great ones. Choose sources by their median score, and choose the scores that count as outliers (9–10 to start). Grey dots are a source's events, black diamonds its outliers, and the tick its median; click a diamond to open the event.

When events happen

Each tick is one event, and the vertical line marks today. Newsletter events carry their issue's date. Scroll, pinch, or drag the slider to change the dates shown.

The axes

The model answers the same questions about every event: does one voice hold the room, is there an object to look at, how much is planned, is anyone selling, who organizes it, how easy is it to talk to strangers, and who is it for.

Format matters most. Each dot is a format's average score; bigger dots mean more events.

Each penalty lowers the average score: compare events with and without it.

The scrape

Each source's events, every web address counted once. The spider follows links on the pages it visits, and its events get scores once it finds their dates.

Sources

Which sources lead to events worth lingering at? Each chart averages the scores of every event a source found, upcoming and past, a recurring series counted once. Dots mark the average and whiskers its 95% range; groups with few events are left out. Two hand-picked sources, NYC Off Tech and Social Fabric, appear in bold as benchmarks.

A source is the site Loitering read. Events the spider found count toward the source it started from, their origin. The domain is the site hosting the event's own page.

Loitering has scored 32,293 upcoming and 12,968 past events.

By source

Upcoming events alone, the ones you could still go to, and past events alone:

Social Fabric by section

Social Fabric groups its links to community into sections. Each event comes from one section's link (sections with at least 5 events).

By origin

Spider events count toward the newsletter or page they trace back to (origins with at least 10 events).

By place kind

Events from the websites of places nearby, by kind of place.

By event domain

The site hosting each event's page (domains with at least 20 events); the big event platforms are in bold.

Yield

A high average from few events marks a niche. What matters is how many good events (scoring 7 or more) each origin finds, upcoming and past.

Each origin's events, average score, share scoring 7 or more, and good events in each period.

10Reconnect Phone-Free Field Tripreconnectmovement.orgFri Oct 3, 8:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruisticThe listing promises "social games, unstructured hanging, & physical activities" and a phone-free day "for in-person connection" on a free ferry trip, with no lecture, performance, or object to view.
10Spotify Deletion Dance Partybuttondown.com/nycofftech/archive/nyc-o…Fri Dec 5, 7:00 PMPartyMediumAltruisticThe listing asks you to "DANCE with each other" and "Bring an instrument if you play one," which invites open mingling around a shared theme. The "resources on site" for moving to alternatives are informational, with no ticket or sales pitch mentioned.
10Spotify Unwrappedwithfriends.events/event/QVDa7IZ4/spoti…Fri Dec 5, 7:00 PMPartyMediumAltruisticThe listing centers on "dance" and a "musical celebration" with open "stations for playlist transferral and reflection," and "all are welcome—from skeptics to the delete-curious," which invites conversation about a shared interest, though the single presentation and piñata finale add some scheduled structure.
10ACTION Potluckpenguinrandomhouse.com/books/782387/att…Thu Dec 11, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruisticThe listing is a "potluck" where people will "set them in motion over shared food," with no ticket, purchase, or membership, and the organizer is an individual (Connor) rather than a business, so the open-ended, food-centered gathering invites conversation among attendees.
10New Year’s Delete Daydanmaxfox.comFri Jan 2, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruisticThe listing describes a "cozy setting" for a shared theme (quitting social media, "digital autonomy") hosted by an individual, with no ticket, purchase, or program mentioned, so it reads as an open gathering where conversation can drift off-theme.
10Action Potlucksbuttondown.com/nycofftech/archive/nyc-o…Thu Jan 8, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruistic"Come together over shared food to discuss what is important to us" describes open group conversation around a light hook (food and a shared purpose) with no speaker or program, and the organizer is an individual asking people to email for a spot, with nothing to buy.
10Love-A-Paloozaeventbrite.com/e/love-a-palooza-tickets…Sun Jan 18, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruisticThe listing describes a free, open "few hours" where people "come join us" to celebrate love and friendship, with a light theme and "whether you're coming solo" signaling that strangers are expected to mingle, and nothing is sold or performed for the room.
10Action Potluckbuttondown.com/nycofftech/archive/nyc-o…Thu Jan 22, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruistic"Come together over shared food to discuss what is important to us" describes an open, potluck-style gathering with a light hook (food) and no object to view, and the organizer is an individual asking people to email for a spot rather than a business selling anything.
10Funemployed?! & Friends Cozy, Comfort Potluckluma.com/sgwssvfxMon Jan 26, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruistic"Come hang out with folks who relate" and a comfort food potluck with sweats/PJs encouraged signal an open, unstructured hangout built around a light theme (food) rather than a program, with no sign of a sales pitch or a single speaker, though the organizer is unclear and the category is unlisted.
10Action Potlucksbuttondown.com/nycofftech/archive/nyc-o…Thu Feb 5, 7:00 PMGatheringMediumAltruistic"Come together over shared food" is a light hook with open conversation, and the goal of addressing what's important "collectively" suggests a shared purpose that makes talking with strangers natural; the organizer is an individual (Connor) who asks only for an email to reserve a spot.

0Jeepers Creepers: Live Jazz Trioacehotel.com/going-on/jazz-live-setSat Oct 10, 12:30 PMPerformanceHighSoftThe listing centers on a live trio performance ("a live performance by Jeepers Creepers"; "leaving audiences with no choice but to dance all night") with table bookings through Opentable, so it's a concert at a venue (Sebastian, Ace Hotel Athens, not NYC) that leaves some room for dinner and dancing but is built around watching the band.
0Current Work: Toward Circular Construction, with Felix Heiselcooper.edu/index.php/events-and-exhibit…Mon Jun 22, 6:30 PMTalkHighSoftThe listing centers on a lecture by Felix Heisel ('presents a lecture') preceded by a trade fair of vendors ('trade fair featuring... vendors'), so it is one voice at a time with a scheduled program and no open-conversation hook.
0On this Day: Met Cloisters Opening | Fort Tryon Park Conservancyforttryonpark.org/event/on-this-day-met…Sun May 10, 12:00 AMOtherLowAltruisticThe listing is an "On This Day" historical blurb about the Met Cloisters opening with no gathering, meetup, or social wording, and its focus is the museum itself, so it describes a thing to view rather than an event for talking with strangers.
0Explorations in Puppetry: Giving Form to the Fantastictelos.haus/events/2025/march/16/explora…Sun Mar 15, 8:00 PMClassHighHardIt is a "hands-on workshop" with "guided instruction" and listed "techniques covered," which makes it an instructor-led class with a program, and the $25 cost plus the venue listing "Telos haus" suggest a paid, business-run event.
0Tech IPOs: The path from private to public. Hosted by Goodfin at #NYTechWeek 2026.partiful.com/e/suiUkzxWKTrNjbWRUoAeTue Jun 2, 8:00 AMTalkHighSoftThe listing calls it a "summit" to "discuss" tech IPOs with "investors, advisors, and operators" under the "Talk" and "Professional Development" categories, which signals a scheduled program with one speaker at a time, and Goodfin, a company, hosts it as part of the "#NYTechWeek ecosystem," suggesting it benefits from attendees being there.
0RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 11 Viewing Partyredeyeny.com/event/drag-race-viewing-pa…Fri Jun 19, 7:00 PMScreeningMediumSoftThe event is a live screening of a TV show where attendees watch the episode together, so the screen is the focal object, though the free popcorn, drink specials, and social framing leave room to talk with strangers around it, and the venue (Red Eye NY) benefits from drink sales.
0Comedy Open Micfreddysbar.com/events/the-fun-mic-alexs…Mon Jun 1, 7:00 PMPerformanceHighSoftThe listing is a 'comedy open mic' where performers take turns on stage ('Open Mic / Comedy', 'Stand-up', 'New Material'), so the room watches one voice at a time and the set schedule fills the night, while the venue ('Freddy's Bar') hosts it, which likely benefits from drink sales.
0https://www.westdenhaag.nl/exhibitions/26_02_Kathy_Ackerwestdenhaag.nl/exhibitions/26_02_Kathy_…Sun Feb 22, 7:00 PMExhibitionLowSoftThe listing is a year-long art exhibition at an art space ('Blood, Guts and Anarchy: The Work of Kathy Acker' featuring a photo), so attendees come to view the art rather than each other, and the organizer is a venue.
0https://litang.community/2026/03/31/weaving-thought-into-matter-new-york-based-artist-jayoung-yoon/litang.community/2026/03/31/weaving-tho…Sun Apr 12, 8:00 PMExhibitionLowSoftThe listing contains only a URL repeated as title and description, but the title "Weaving Thought into Matter: New York-based artist Jayoung Yoon" points to an art show or artist presentation, where attendees view the artist's work rather than each other.
0Curator Toursgreenwichhistory.org/event/curator-tour…Sat Jun 20, 12:00 AMTourHighSoftThe listing is a guided tour led by a senior curator of a museum exhibition ("exclusive tours of our current exhibition"), so attendees are there to view the exhibit under one speaker rather than to talk with each other.

Outlier events by source

Some sources list mostly poor events but a few great ones. Choose sources by their median score, and choose the scores that count as outliers (9–10 to start). Grey dots are a source's events, black diamonds its outliers, and the tick its median; click a diamond to open the event.

Does the rubric hold up?

fomo labels each of its events with its own type, an independent check. Parties, games, and volunteering should score high; talks, concerts, screenings, and exhibitions, low.

Rows are fomo's types, columns the model's formats; each cell is that row's share.

The disagreements: past events that score highest although fomo calls them talks, concerts, screenings, or exhibitions.

10ConcertDJ Days – Glen Island Beachparksevents.westchestercountyny.gov/eve…PartyThe listing is a free county beach day where people 'come for a swim and enjoy DJ Days,' so the DJ music is a light backdrop for open hanging out rather than a show everyone watches, and it's run by Westchester County Pools and Beaches, a public institution.
10ConcertFelix Hernandez’s Rhythm Revue Dance Partynjpac.org/event/felix-hernandez-26PartyThe listing calls it a "free dance party" with "Community" and "Outdoor" tags, so people are dancing together rather than watching a performance, though the "Concert" and "Performance" tags add some ambiguity about whether a band plays for the room.
10TalkFranco-anglo en lignemeetup.com/french-96/events/312337986GatheringBreakout rooms for "one-on-one conversation sessions" with a French/English split and skill-based grouping give a light hook around open conversation with other attendees, and the listing names no purchase or sales pitch.
9ScreeningThe New York City Sci-Fi/Fantasy Meetup Group Monthly Meetupmeetup.com/scifi-22/events/314698755GatheringThe listing calls it a "monthly conversation" and a "Meetup Group" gathering around the shared sci-fi/fantasy theme, with no talk, panel, or screening in the description, though the category tags list Screening and Performance and the venue is a food hall that likely benefits from attendee purchases.
9TalkSip & Scale: AI For Diverse Founders And Executivespartiful.com/e/l5ZDdLiowT38u4m6924QGatheringThe listing calls it a "morning brunch gathering" that "emphasizes meaningful connections and conversation in a casual, no-panel format," so the brunch is the light hook and conversation is the point. The "Talk" category and "Networking" tag suggest some business-networking pull, but nothing in the text is a sales pitch, so I read the funnel as soft.
9ConcertJazz & Wine: A Night of Connections (Hosted by Alt-Black at #NYTechWeek 2026.)partiful.com/e/AweaKcED4gNSr3LJzfCGGatheringThe listing describes a "networking event" for "connection and conversation" with wine tastings and jazz as a light hook, not a performance or program, though the networking framing and tech-week tie-in suggest the host benefits from attendance.
9ConcertHappy Hour at Dutch Baby Bakeryjazzwahi.org/events/happy-hour-ar-dutch…Gathering"Happy hour" and "unwind" suggest an open social gathering with jazz as background atmosphere, but the venue is a business (Dutch Baby Bakery) that benefits from attendance, so it's a soft funnel.
9ConcertSWING Wednesdays (+others)dancemanhattan.com/calendar/event/103PartyThe listing describes a free, no-cover bar night with rotating live bands, "after-work drinks and meeting friends," and the swing dance category suggests people dance with each other rather than watch a set, though the "concert" category and band focus make the music a partial object. The venue is a business, and drinks benefit it, so the funnel is soft.
9ConcertShirley's Templepetescandystore.com/events/shirley-s-te…PartyThe description says guests are "invited to dance, drink, and socialize on the patio," a loose nightlife hangout with music and drinks, though the venue (Pete's Candy Store) and the "Concert" category keep it from being fully unstructured or community-run.
9TalkPokemon Trading Card Gamefomo:120218GatheringThe listing calls itself a "weekly Pokemon TCG meetup at the board game bar," so the word "meetup" and the bar setting point to open, drop-in hanging out, with the card game as a light hook rather than a program. The venue likely benefits from drinks and foot traffic, which makes it soft rather than hard, and the shared game gives strangers an easy opening.
